BBQ Ribs Oven Style

This was a dish that I normally would fix on the grill.  But coming from Jersey, I found that I couldn't make it during the winter months when the grill was covered with snow.  So, I converted a summer time favorite, to an "anytime" favorite.

I like cooking certain meats slow, so this recipe can actually be made in a crock-pot on low for about 9hours.  When using the oven, this cooks for about 5 hours total.

BBQ Ribs Oven Style

1-Baby Back Ribs
1/2 cup Mustard (I use Jack Daniels No 7)
1- Large Bottle of your favorite BBQ Sauce (or see   home-made version below)
1/2 tsp Liquid Smoke (this gives a grill taste to the meat)

I usually don't have time to make everything from scratch, so I look for short cuts when I can.  But, if you want to make your own BBQ sauce from scratch, see the recipe on the bottom.
  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Place ribs, meaty-side up, in a large roasting pan.
  3. Spread and rub the mustard all over the ribs.
  4. Add water to the roasting pan, about a 1/4 inch
  5. Add the 1/2 tsp of Liquid Smoke on top of the ribs
  6. Cover with aluminum foil and place in oven.
  7. Wait about 1-1/2 hours, take out of oven, and coat the ribs with BBQ sauce.  Don't use all the sauce right now.  There's one more coating to do later.
  8. Place back in the oven, and cook for another 2 hours.
  9. Remove ribs again, add more BBQ over the ribs.  If you are low on water in the pan, add a little more
  10. Cover ribs and place back in the oven.  Cook for another hour
  11. Take the foil off, and allow ribs to cook uncovered for about 15mins
  12. Remove from oven and ENJOY!!!

Here's a BBQ sauce recipe that I picked up.  If you have time to make it, goes really good with the ribs!!

Bourbon BBQ Sauce
  • 1/2 onion, minced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup bourbon whiskey
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, combine the onion, garlic, and whiskey. Simmer for 10 minutes, or until onion is translucent. Mix in the ground black pepper, salt, ketchup, tomato paste, vinegar, liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and hot pepper sauce.
  2. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 20 minutes. Run sauce through a strainer if you prefer a smooth sauce.
